Palm basket-making

Cestería en Palma

It is remarkable the evolution this artisan group which belong to the “Quichè” ethnic people has experienced since 2001, when INNOVARTE started off a productive collaboration with them together with FUNDAP Guatemala. Some years ago, women’s work was limited to making plaits, which later, men used to weave traditional covers for the famous “Zapata Rum” bottles. After the interventions, the number of products this group elaborated has been expanded to a great extend. Besides, traditional hats made by men have increased in quality to such an extent that today a great deal of them are being exported. For INNOVARTE, it has been a privilege to collaborate with these craftsmen and women in the processes of improving raw material, colour and creation of dozens of new products.
